Today it rained people at the TIPA auditorium. People Like Us, all of whom shelled out Rs 100 each to give a collective thumbs up to the first public round of the Miss Tibet contest.
And once again, Tibet carried the day. With a bit more conviction amidst whispers that the PM of the Parliament-in-exile had finally veered around to the idea. All nay-sayers ceased to matter as the girls walked in one by one and put Tibet on the centre-stage.
Tenzin Yangyi, in her chupa Tibetan kimono, began the presentation round by holding forth on differences between China and Tibet.
Tenzin Deki introduced the crowd to her beloved political prisoners.
Lhakpa Doma and Doma Tsering carried the theme forward by waxing eloquent on Buddhism and Tibetan kings. Cheers rent the air when Tenzin Yangkyi set the stage on fire with sheer oomph in her red gown and sang My heart will go on. Deki took the stage to sing Shakira8217;s Underneath your clothes.
Dolma Tsering steered you back to Tibet with a rendition of a song in praise of the lost land. That the youngsters agreed was evident as they sang along. There were many hugs backstage. For the four girls, for Lobsang Wangyal, the man behind it all, and for Tibet. That was the biggest hug of all.
