Just as no cricket tour of England is complete without a match at Lord8217;s, so no series in India can do without Mumbai. Yet, just as Lord8217;s didn8217;t host a match in the 2004 Champions Trophy, this year8217;s version 8212; to be held in India 8212; may not see a match in Mumbai.
The problem is to do with the in-stadia advertising as two of the three venues 8212; Delhi and Mumbai 8212; have their own agreements with various corporates.
ICC CEO Malcom Speed, who was in Delhi to meet BCCI officials today, said a 8216;8216;clean8217;8217; venue 8212; in advertising terms 8212; was essential for any board to host an ICC event. 8216;8216;That8217;s so ICC sponsors get visibility for their brands. And if we cannot resolve the issues, we are open to another venue, provided the production costs don8217;t increase.8217;8217;
He refused to speculate on whether the matches could be moved out of Mumbai and Delhi but instead said both the ICC and the BCCI needed more time 8212; and more meetings, the next in a week or two 8212; to resolve the issues.
Speed also said that India would be receiving a certain portion of the revenues as the host nation and also its share of the profit as one of the 10 test nations while a certain amount from the event went to the ICC towards funding several development programmes.
