She was born in the land of Lech Walesa, studies in the land of Mahatma Gandhi and her heart lies in the land of soccer-star Ronaldo.

Seventeen-year-old Katariyna Dratehska from Poland, a student of the Mahindra United World College, has by now gotten over the cultural shock she initially faced in India. She landed alone in a hot, humid and totally alien land. There was fear at first, but as time flew, she started enjoying life here. “I love Pune, especially the auto-rickshaws here. I want to take one home!” says this charming girl who freaks out shopping here. Admiring Indian culture, Katariyna enjoys wearing salwar kameez and likes to kill some of her spare time at the Internet cafes on M.G. Road and at German Bakery.

The city crowd is “nice and open” but she feels slightly embarrassed when people stare at her – thanks to her complexion. Ask what she doesn’t like about the city and she’s quick to say, “its beggars,” even though she is sympathetic towards their predicament. The traffic, that moves along the left side of the road, is also a confusing issue. And how does she rate Indian food? “At first, I didn’t like it but now I enjoy it,” she smiles. But though she admires our khana, it is still `Pizza Hut’ that tops her list of eateries in town.

Though she wanted to become a journalist when very young, she now plans to join a good university in the United Kingdom. But like millions of young girls, her heart travels all the way to Brazil, courtesy Ronaldo, for whom she shed buckets of tears when his team lost in the final of the soccer World Cup.

Although Katariyna plans to stay here for two years, till she finishes her education programme, she definitely wants to return later. No, she does not want to study here or tour the place, she just wants to celebrate the most memorable event of her life here. Yes, she wants to get married in our country! Why? For Katariyna, it is an amazing place, her wedding in India will be a very different experience and all her family and friends will have an opportunity to see this wonderful country. What will be the venue? “Goa, of course, for its romantic beaches. Or maybe some place in Rajasthan!” she laughs.
