NAGALAND has a growing problem. There has been a school boom in the state in recent years, especially in capital Kohima but most of these schools are not affiliated or recognised by the state education board.
Since many of these schools are housed in rented premises, they have no playground and other facilities.
Mizoram tightens inner line rules
FACED with an increase in the non-tribal population in the state, Mizoram has decided to be stricter in enforcing provisions of the Inner Line Regulations.
Official sources in Aizawl said the number of Bangladeshi migrants in the state has increased rapidly in recent years and that has caused 8216;8216;a law and order problem8217;8217;. It said most non-tribal people are those who have stayed back even after their work-permit, valid for six months, expired.
In Meghalaya, it8217;s destination IT
MEGHALAYA, whose major source of revenue includes electricity, coal and tourism, has drawn up a plan to become a 8216;mini information technology destination8217; in the next couple of years.
A one acre has already been selected for setting up an IT Park, with Meghalaya science and technology minister Mukul Sangma claiming that Shillong would now not just be a tourist attraction, but also an IT destination.
Assam8217;s rescue mission
THE floods in Assam would have caused even more destruction and deaths had it not been for groups of youth rescuing marooned people in different districts.
One such group was from the Hindustan Paper Corporation township at Jagiroad, which saved over 200 people in just one day. But six of these ten boys died when their boat capsized.
Italian award for social worker
IMPHAL-based social worker and NGO activist Anna Pinto has been selected for the prestigious Silver Banner award instituted by the Regional Assembly of Tuscany, Italy, for the year 2003-2004.
Anna was selected for her contribution in stopping various armed rebel groups in the state from inducting children into their fighting ranks. Meanwhile, a recent government survey said Manipur has about 20 insurgent groups.
