SURAT, June 7: This one is in a passive voice. Lest this species, which shout from the top of their voice 8212; never mind the object of those not-so-sweet soundbites is at an arm8217;s distance 8212; should mind and increase the pitch of the argument to stifle the dissentive voice.

It8217;s surprising why these members of the loud-voiced community assume that a tenor voice is a must when it comes to driving home the point. This 8220;louder the better8221; attitude and the concomitant line of thinking is never music to those who are at the receiving end of this voice terrorism.

Alas, like all bad things in life this species too can8217;t be wished away. So there you are suffering in silence, while the loud-mouthed brigade carries on regardless, least respecting your right to be heard and the right to enjoy peace when din and clamour can easily be avoided.

These terrorists could be found anywhere; work place, public places or even homes. Unfortunately, there is no legislation that can effectively silence them or at least chasten them enough to see to it that their words do not shoot through the eardrums of victims, innocent or otherwise.Just when you are desperately trying to concentrate on something as if your life is depending on it comes this man of words, who is dead sure that sotto voce is the last mode of communication that should be avoided unless you were trapped in icecold water a la Kate Winslet in Titanic and can8217;t raise your voice more than a murmur.A frown here or a wry smile there does not seem to have any effect on him, who raises his voice further as if on a cue, to block whatever little chance you had of making peace with oneself. Needless to say you have to start from the scratch, all over again, hoping against hope that your expressions will tell the story more eloquently than your tormentor8217;s words could ever have.Doctors may blame this intrinsic urge to speak loudly on hearing impairedness of the speaker no offence meant to the deaf, who despite their handicap do not become a source of nuisance to others, but the logic falls flat in the face of those for whom speaking loudly is a matter of choice, which they always exercise.Raising your voice to be heard when pandemonium is reigning supreme Assemblies and Parliament are among the noteworthy examples is justified but not when you are confronted with pin-drop silence. This tendency to make one8217;s voice heard when no one else is willing goes well with those who like the sound of their voice. But then striking a false note is probably a virtue they prefer to flaunt. Their sound effect may make them unpopular, but they care two hoots. Whether speaking loudly should be clubbed with other instances of indecent behaviour like puffing your cigarette into someone else8217;s face or making an intolerable sound while sipping a beverage is a debatable issue. But rest assured that when it comes to debate, those who can break the sound barrier, have the final say: whether others agree or not.
