Thailand8217;s billionaire prime minister and an English businessman were vying on Wednesday for a major stake in Liverpool, one of the world8217;s most famous soccer clubs.

Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecoms tycoon before he turned to politics, said he would not sweeten his 100 million offer for 30 per cent of the club, which had appeared a done deal before local construction magnate Steve Morgan made a counter bid.

Morgan, a supporter, said he would give Liverpool seven days to take up his offer of a 73 million pounds 128 million cash injection which could be used to buy players.

Thaksin rated his chances of winning at 50:50. 8216;8216;Someone may want to bid higher and expect us to raise the ante. We will not do that,8217;8217; he told reporters.

Morgan, the former chairman of building company Redrow, said, 8216;8216;The performances this season have been unacceptable and they will not get better until we bring in new players,8217;8217; he said. 8216;8216;That won8217;t change unless we put more capital into the club.8217;8217;
