CHANDIGARH, July 22: A telephone racket involving issuance of false advice notes and installation of telephones has come to light in the city.

The racket seemed to be a well-organised operation of forging documents and later installing telephones at the residences and offices of people not eligible for a telephone connection. According to sources, over a dozen such connections have been detected. Some telephones were new connections, while others were cases of shifting of telephones from one residence to another.

Some telephones were installed only recently. Interestingly, the persons who have got these telephones installed also figure on the waiting list. One such resident of Panchkula got a telephone installed at his office only last month, while his name is still mentioned on the waiting list.

The General Manager, Telecom, Prithipal Singh, when contacted, confirmed that they had come across such cases recently. He stated that action would be taken after an inquiry, to be conducted by the Vigilance.
