PUNE, December 13: Telecommunications is a part and parcel of infrastructure and has added a new dimension to economics, said A V Gokak, secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and chairman, Telecom Commission.
Gokak was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day national seminar on telecom management organised by the Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management (SITM) here on Saturday. According to Gokak, telecommunications can not be viewed in isolation as it has become an integral part of people’s lives. "Micro is as important as macro. An exchange, which is the interface to the subscriber, is as important as an international gateway," he said.
Addressing the gathering of students from Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Managment, Gokak emphasised that there were varying skills needed for telecom managers. "Apart from the knowledge of technology, management is equally important," he remarked. He added that youngsters have an advantage as they have elasticity of mind and openness in outlook. With the convergence of technology and increasing usage of computers, things have undergone a change, Gokak said. "The ability to analyse and synthesise is extremely important. When it comes to policy making, we do suffer from major managerial deficiencies," he observed.
