Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Monday announced the formation of a special team of around 200 handpicked policemen under an IG to combat growing religious extremism and militancy across the state, even as Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan vowed to stamp out the threat posed by the RSS and NDF.

In a visit to Tirur—which has seen a communal murder and attacks allegedly involving the RSS and NDF a week back—the CM said the eruption in Tirur was a carefully devised attempt for a communal conflagration. “We will go to any length to prevent that,” the CM assured. Hours before the CM reached Tirur, Muslim League leader and Union Minister E Ahamed visited the area.
