UNIDENTIFIED gunmen shot dead the deputy manager of Corramore tea estate in Udalguri district close to the Indo-Bhutan border on Tuesday, sending shock waves through the tea industry which had only recently started feeling comfortable with a fall in militant attacks.

Gautam Kataki, deputy manager of the tea estate owned by McLeod Russel India Ltd, a Williamson Magor company, was shot from close range inside the estate as he was inspecting the plantations around noon. He succumbed to the injuries on the spot.

Udalguri district is infested by several militant groups, prominent among them being the National Democratic Front of Bodoland NDFB and the All Adivasi National Liberation Army of Assam AANLAA. It was only two days ago that security forces gunned down three militants near Harisinga, under the same police station jurisdiction as Corramore.

8220;While investigations are on and sniffer dogs have been rushed to the spot, we are yet to ascertain whether it was the handiwork of a criminal gang or an underground group,8221; Udalguri Deputy Commissioner S S Meenakshi Sundaram, said over the telephone. 8220;Though it is too early to confirm, the involvement of underground groups cannot be ruled out altogether,8221; the DC said, adding that Corramore happened to be a transit point for certain underground groups.

Kataki had no PSO with him when he was attacked.
