Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, one of the most wanted in the US list of 55 officials of the deposed regime of Saddam Hussein, was in US custody, the CNN reported late Thursday night. The news channel said it had confirmed the capture of Aziz but was awaiting details. The 67-year-old Aziz was Saddam’s adviser for over two decades. The only Christian in Saddam’s Revolutionary Council, he probably survived because he had no power base and, therefore, did not pose a threat to Saddam.
In 1979, Aziz was named Deputy Prime Minister and tasked with the role to function as a diplomat and explain the Iraqi position to the world.
