Talks fail between Toyota, Union

A management-trade union reconciliation meeting facilitated by the Karnataka Labour Commissioner to end the lockout at the Toyota Kirloskar plant at Bidadi, near Bangalore, ended in a stalemate on Monday, forcing the labour department to refer the issue to the state government.

The meeting of the management of Toyota Kirloskar Motors Ltd TKM and the trade union, Toyota Kirloskar Motors Employees Union TKMEU failed after the management refused to accept suggestions of the labour department 8212; based on demands of the union.

8220;The reconciliation talks between the management and the union failed and hence, the matter will be referred to the government,8221; labour commissioner K. S. Manjunath said.

The labour department had suggested that the dismissal order of three employees be kept in abeyance, unconditional lifting of the lockout, and unconditional withdrawal of the strike by the union. Following Monday8217;s meeting TKM senior general manager HR, V. Ramamurthy said, 8220;Considering the safety of the employees and property of the organisation, we need to continue this lockout and hence our stand remains the same8221;.

The union8217;s parent body CITU8217;s state secretary V. G. K. Nair said the union had assured the labour department that it would not resort to unlawful activities in the company. Union members took out a peaceful protest march in Bangalore on Monday against the attitude of the management.
