After the prestigious Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here kicked up a controversy with its doctors refusing to admit an HIV-positive pregnant woman, District Collector M T Krishna Babu has announced that efforts are being made to set up an operation theatre exclusively for AIDS patients at the institute.

The Indian Express’s southern edition had carried a story on June 10 about doctors at the RIMS superspecialty hospital refusing to perform a Caesarean section on Lalitha, a poor HIV+ woman from Proddatur, when she approached them to save her unborn child from the disease.

There was public outcry after the news was published and several social welfare organisations and political parties, including the TDP and Left, had condemned the incident and deplored the attitude of the doctors. RIMS Superintendent Bhanumathi said an inquiry had been conducted into the incident and a report submitted to the District Collector.
