
A Swedish delegation, led by Crown Princess of Sweden Princess Victoria, visited the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC on Monday to understand the democratic and executive structure of the civic body and to discuss the development work being carried out by the civic administration. The Princess showed interest in understanding the growth of the city and the development planning being undertaken by the PMC with the Swedish Industrial Development Agency SIDA.
Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi gave a brief presentation on the ongoing development work and the possible sectors where the Swedish Government can contribute.
Pardeshi said that Pune has seen a growth rate of about 12 per cent due to the strong presence of automobile and information technology sectors. The rise of construction industry has seen unexpected growth in the city, he said pointing out that the public transport system was a major cause of concern and that efforts are on with the Swedish agencies to better the situation. Goran Johnson of Ramboll highlighted the assistance being extended by the Sweedish agency for the planning of land use and transport. 8220;Wise planning is needed for the city or else the situation might go out of hand,8221; he said.
