In a reshuffle of nine inspectors and sub-inspectors made by the Chandigarh Police today, an infamous officer finds himself on an important post. With this decision, the officer, who was in the dock for concealing information regarding a drug peddler, has been shifted from the police wing to a sensitive post in the Operations Cell 8212; which is responsible for assimilating intelligence inputs on terrorists and taking appropriate action.
The former Station House Officer of the Sector-36 police station, Inspector Davinder Sharma, was suspended after an inquiry against him found 8216;dereliction of duty8217; on his part.
Justifying today8217;s decision, Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava said the charges levelled against Sharma were 8220;not very serious8221; and therefore he had been deputed at the Operations Cell.
Inspector General of Police S K Jain, on the basis of a preliminary inquiry report, had however stated in October that he would not spare the officers who were found to be involved in such activities.
The case pertains to the arrest of notorious drug peddler Raju by the Fatehgarh Sahib police in November last year. Davinder Sharma, the then SHO of the Sector-36 police station, had raided Raju8217;s house in Sector 52.
A constable posted with the Special Cell, Baljeet Singh, was allegedly present in the house with Raju at the time of the raid. Despite knowing about the constable8217;s presence at Raju8217;s residence, Davinder Sharma hushed up the matter and did not inform his seniors.
The matter came to light when the Narcotics Control Bureau arrested Raju in July this year. An inquiry was marked to Deputy Superintendent of Police Cheema who found 8216;dereliction of duty8217; on the part of Davinder.
Sharma had hit the headlines a decade ago too, again for all the wrong reasons. He was booked on charges of wrongful confinement, assault, kidnapping and abduction of a complainant in the Sector-36 police station in 1998.
A case was registered on the complaint of a Sector-38 resident in the same police station. Sharma was also allegedly caught with a woman in a compromising position, for which he assaulted by the area residents. In an attempt to escape the public wrath, he had reportedly fired gunshots in the air. He was also made to apologise for the same. In another case, Sharma had lost his wireless set, for which he had to face a departmental inquiry.
