NEW DELHI, June 1: The government today introduced the Prasar Bharati Amendment Bill 1998, with an important clause that challenges CEO Surrindar Singh Gill8217;s continuance.

According to Clause 6 2, any person holding office as a whole-time member, will cease to do so once the Prasar Bharati Broadcasting Corporation of India Act receives the assent of the President. It says the member quot;shall also not be entitled to any compensation because of his ceasing to hold such officequot;. Gill has said that he would go to court if the BJP government removed him.

The Bill reinstates Prasar Bharati8217;s supervision by a parliamentary committee and provides for the establishment of a Broadcasting Council. Other aspects of the bill, introduced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj, provide for retirement of one-third of the board members by rotation, an upper age limit of 62 for the CEO, and the appointment of two full-time members of finance and personnel.

Meanwhile, former Iamp;B minister S Jaipal Reddy,who had notified the Prasar Bharati Act with effect from September 15 last year, feels that the ordinance making certain amendments in the Act should not have been allowed to lapse.
