Vaulter V S Surekha gave her best to establish a new national record of 4.08m in the women8217;s pole vault during the fourth national circuit meet held at the NIS Campus. The previous mark of 4.05m was also set by her last month during the Inter Railways Athletics Meet at Delhi.
The Railway athlete promises to raise the bar further during the next month8217;s inter-state meet at Chennai. 8220;I will try to cross 4.20m at Chennai,8221; she said after her feat today. The Chennai meet is also supposed to be the last meet for the country8217;s elite athletes to show their mettle and at the same time attain qualifying mark for the Doha Asian Games. The Games qualifying mark in the event is 4.20m.
But before leaving for Chennai, Surekha also has to arrange a new pole for herself. The record holder said she has been competing with equipment nearly a decade old which is hampering her progress.
Surekha8217;s performance apart, country8217;s aspiring athletes hoping to book berths for the Doha Games, had nothing to prove today. Winner of the one lap event in both men8217;s and women8217;s section, which is otherwise important from the relay point of view, failed to raise the level of their performance.
The men8217;s winner Bhupinder Singh failed to dip below 46 seconds, clocking a not encouraging 47.49 seconds. Manjeet Kaur8217;s performance also wasn8217;t impressive: 53.55 seconds, far from her best of 51.05 seconds.
