
Tapi River8217;s birthday
The Surat Municipal Corporation held a function at the Tapi river bed in the city on Wednesday to mark the birthday of the river. This day is observed every year by people of the city as Tapi8217;s birthday. Hundreds of women lit lamps and offered prayers to the river, considered to be a source of livelihood for many. A number of women councillors including Snehalata Chauhan, Dr Vasu Patel, Sudha Desai, Veena Joshi among others were present for the function.
Civil supply raid
Civil supply officials, during a raid on a leading petroleum products dealer Desai and Dalal Trading Company of the city, collected samples of petrol after it received complaints of adulteration of petrol. The officials said action would be taken after the samples were tested. In another departmental raid in the Salabatpura area on Tuesday evening, civil supplies officials seized grains worth Rs 41,000 from Pravin I Patel Traders at Begumwadi after the dealer was found to be illegally selling grain without having the licence to do so. Legal proceedings have been initiated against Patel, zonal officers said on Wednesday.
Two cases of an electricity wire falling off and poles being uprooted were reported late on Tuesday night, after rains lashed the city. Fire brigade sources said cases were reported from near the Piparwada High School near Rander and Mithi Khali areas of the city. However, no one was injured in the incident. Meanwhile, the city did not experience any rainfall on Wednesday, though the sky remained overcast throughout the day.
FY forms
VADODARA: The first year forms of the M K Amin Arts, Science and Commerce college will be distributed at the college from Thursday. The forms will also be accepted at the college from Thursday till July 7.
GEB transfers
The Gujarat Electricity Board GEB on Wednesday effected promotion transfers of 46 deputy engineers. The Board officers from the North, West and South zones in the city have been promoted as executive engineers. Out of the 46, 28 are from the Transmission and Distribution department and, 18 from the generation department. According to an official spokesman, 10 other deputy engineers were given transfers on request.
GEB peon dies
Dilipbhai Kantibhai Solanki, about 30, working in the Gujarat Electricity Board as a peon fell down from a window on second floor while removing a khus khus8217; from there and died on Wednesday morning. Solanki, a resident of Harijanvas slums in the Gotri area, was rushed to the S S G Hospital, where he was declared dead. According to the hospital police, he had sustained serious injuries in the head besides several fractures in various parts of his body.
Cyclone aid
On behalf of the Forum of Federations, Associations and Chambers of Gujarat, Chairman Rakesh Agrawal on Wednesday donated Rs 14 lakhs to the Chief Minister8217;s Relief Fund for the cyclone-hit in Kutch and Saurashtra regions by presenting cheques of its members to District Collector Anil Mukim.
