Provisions for employment
Surat: According to the employment budget of the state for the year 1998-99, provisions will be made to employ as many as 50,000 people. The unemployed will given jobs through 250 bharti melas8216; to be conducted at different places in the state. A sum of Rs 1.5 crore has been earmarked to enable candidates travel to and fro to the place of the interview. According to a release, an additional Rs 34.50 lakhs will be spent on providing employment to residents of the six new districts carved out last year. While 37,200 people will be provided means of self-employment through bankable schemes, 54,230 will benefit from the Manav Kalyan Yojna.

Meeting
The special quarterly meeting of the district collectorate will meet here on July 28 to review the progress of the different state government schemes aimed at the upliftment of the scheduled tribes in the district. To be chaired by the district collector, the meeting will be held at 5 pm at the collectorate. Progress made in the implementation of schemes of employment, education, among others will be discussed, according to a statement issued by the collector on Wednesday.

BPL card-holders
Under a special provision, all BPL below poverty line ration card-holders of the district will get 2 kgs of palmolein oil at Rs 33.50 per kg from ration shops in the district, according to Civic Supplies officials. The provision has been made because of the rising oil prices. Department officials said adequate stocks of palmolein oil have been despatched to fair price shops in the district.

Offices sealed
The Surat Municipal Corporation sealed two restaurants and 28 offices illegally constructed in Amizara Apartment in Athwa Lines area of the city.

According to the police, the organiser, Arihant, had violated building norms by constructing shops, though in the original plan he had shown the first floor to be used for residential use.

Ladies fortnight
A number of competitions, including Ladies Fortnight8217;, were held by the Bank of Baroda recently. A valedictory and prize distribution ceremony was also organised as part of the function. The function, at Athwa Lines, was chaired by the Bank8217;s Assistant General Manager S Vaidyanathan, while Sanadia, principal of the MTB Arts college was the chief guest.

RJP appointment
Vadodara: Dr Rajendrasinh Rathod has been unanimously appointed city unit president of the Rashtriya Janata Party RJP. He was appointed here on Wednesday in the presence of the party supremo Shankersinh Vaghela. Vinod Naik and Chetan Gore were appointed general secretaries. Vaghela called upon the workers to take part in large numbers at the party8217;s convention in Ahmedabad on August 20. Dr Rathod announced that they would soon organise programmes to protest the rise in prices of essential commodities.

Holiday special
