Heavy rains forecast for coastal areas
With heavy to very heavy rains likely to lash the South Gujarat coast 8212; including Valsad, Surat, Daman, Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli 8212; from Monday night, District Collector R M Shah has alerted the administrative machinery to ensure there are no casualties. Thundershowers and winds of upto 40 kmph are forecast upto Tuesday. Fishermen have been warned against venturing out to sea for the next few days.

Surat city received brief spells of heavy rainfall on Sunday, when the sky was overcast throughout the day.

Bardoli quiet
Bardoli, hit by communal clashes for the past three days, was peaceful on Sunday, with no violence reported anywhere till Sunday evening. Night curfew, however, is likely to continue for at least two more days.

L amp; T donation
Larsen and Toubro Hazira Works has donated Rs 10 lakhs towards the Chief Minister8217;s Relief fund for the cyclone-hit people of Kutch and Saurashtra. A cheque was presented to District Collector R M Shah by president operations A M Naik.

Till date the company has contributed Rs 1 crore towards the cause. While Rs 70 lakhs were given by representatives of the company to the CM in Gandhinagar, Rs 10 lakh each were presented to the collectors of Surat, Vadodara and Amreli, a statement issued here said.

Artists honoured
The Rashtriya Kala Kendra gave annual awards to artists from the city excelling in various fields. Kapil Dev Shukla was awarded for his exceptional performance in drama direction, acting, and script-writing, while director of Noopur Dance Academy Paresh Vora was recognised for his contribution towards classical dance. Kukul Tarmaster was awarded the Yazdi Karanjia best acting performance, while Harish Umrao was adjudged best for the Naliniben Shastri Sangeet award. Sankalp Kulkarni and Dhara Mistry have been chosen as this year8217;s best child artists, while Nutan Vankawala has been chosen as the best female artist and Yamini Vyas the best garba performer.

Shop raided
The Varachha police, in a surprise raid conducted at Rajkamal Video centre on Saturday night, arrested 10 people watching a blue film. Rajesh Patel and Ashok Patel owners of the video theatre along with eight others were arrested, the police said on Sunday.

Karate classes
The Traditional Karate Association of Surat, which has been organising karate and kung fu classes at the Arya Samaj Mandir at Soni Falia, will start new batches of karate and kung fu training July 1 to December 31 from Wednesday. All those interested should contact at the Arya samaj mandir from 6 to 8 am or from 4 to 6 pm till Tuesday.

De-addictionThe Parivartan de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, Chowk Bazaar and the prohibition and excise department of the district administration conducted jointly a de-addiction camp at the Old Civil Hospital in the city on Friday, according to a statement issued here.
