
Serial on Kavi Narmad announced
Aangikam, a city-based music and drama academy, will produce a 26-episode serial called Veer Narmad on the life and works of Kavi Narmad, whose birth anniversary is on Tuesday. The Gujarati serial, directed by Mumbaikar Hina Chhaya, will also be dubbed in Hindi. It will be telecast on Doordarshan in Gujarat and Delhi. Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana was reportedly instrumental in getting the serial slotted on Doorshan in both languages Hindi and Gujarati. More than 70 artists will act in the serial, whose shooting begins in September. The serial is to be produced by Bharati Rana. Music director Gaurang Vyas will set selected poems of Narmad to music.
Rains forecast
The meteorology department has forecast light to heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours in Surat district. The sky is likely to be overcast. All taluka mamalatdars have been asked to keep in touch with the district flood control room.
Poll measure
As a measure to prevent bogus voting, District Electoral Officer Sangeeta Singh has banned polling agents from carrying voters8217; lists out of the polling booths. The electoral officer said polling agents would have to submit voters8217; lists to the presiding officer whenever they wanted to leave the booth.
Officer honoured
Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari has recognised the services of sub-regional employment officer for the disabled Ilaben Naik by handing over the Award for Best Placement Officer, 1998, at a function in Ahmedabad earlier this month. During 1991-98, Naik helped 299 disabled people become self-employed under the government scheme for rural areas.
Malaria camp
A homeopathy dispensary run by the Surat Rotary club is organising a week-long malaria camp at the Jivan Bharati Rotary Hall from August 23. Dr Seema N Shah will treat patients; needy patients will be given free medicines.
Onam wishes
Vadodara: The Baroda Nair Welfare Association has wished happy Onam to all Keralities residing in the city. The association will not celebrate the festival this year as a mark of respect to soldiers who were martyred at Kargil.
