State panel finds lapses at Ukai dam
The Estimate Committee of the State Assembly found 8220;security lapses8221; at Ukai Dam and hydel-power station during its tour of all the power plants of the State. In a letter to the chief minister, Estimate Committee chairman Dheeru Gajera said any person could easily damage the dam as no security system was in place. This was especially worrisome in view of the Kargil intrusions, he said, urging the early deployment of security staff.
Rains ease
Life returned to normal in most areas of Surat, Navsari and Valsad districts of South Gujarat, where little or no rainfall was reported in the past 24 hours. The city, however, received short sharp spells of rain on Thursday evening. The Ukai reservoir8217;s level stood at 309.29 feet, well below the flood reservoir level FRL of 345 feet, on Thursday evening, the flood control room said.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology has decided to give 50 per cent concession to backward class students. In a statement issued here on Thursday, NIFT said seats would be reserved for backward class students from the State. The course in textile designing for apparel fabrics will start from August. At present, the school runs two courses: fashion designing and garment production.
Osho Times
South Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Prem Sharda launched Osho Times Asian edition on Wednesday. The magazine, to be published from Pune, will hit the stands in August. Sharda described Osho as a great thinker who inspired lakhs of people all over the world.
Seminar
A seminar on Vajpai Yuva Rojgar Yogna8217; will be held at Surat People8217;s Hall, Samruddhi building, at noon on Saturday. The seminar, organised by district industry centre, is being held to highlight the scheme.
SUDA request
The Surat Urban Development Authority chief executive has appealed to farmers of Chhapara Bhatha, Amroli and Kosad to co-operate with surveyors in preparing the town planning scheme in these areas.

The crisis group committee of the Surat District Disaster Management Plan will meet on July 24 at 11 a.m. at District Collector Sangeeta Singh8217;s office.
No pipeline gas
Vadodara: Residents living on either side of the road between Sayaji Gardens and Fatehganj crossroads will not be supplied pipeline gas between 1 pm and 5 pm on Friday as the Vadodara Municipal Corporation will repair a main pipeline near Hotel Kalyan in Fatehganj. People have been asked to make alternate arrangements.
