SURAT, Feb 8: Educational activity in all colleges affiliated to the South Gujarat University has come to a standstill, as the agitation launched by students demanding shorter courses for internal and final examinations entered its fourth day on Monday.
The students want only one internal test of 50 marks be conducted on only half the syllabus, be held. In the final examination, they want to be tested on only three-fourths of the syllabus. They justify their demand by pointing out that they lost days during the floods and the 26-day-long teachers8217; strike for more remuneration for assessment.
General secretaries of various affiliated colleges have called on Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Rohit Shelat, asking him to make those concessions. However, Shelat said only the Academic Council could take a decision on this matter.
The students had also agitated when the same council decided to abolish the practice of conducting four unit tests for the current year, and hold two internal examinations instead. The students said they preferred unit tests of 25 marks each to the 100-mark internal examination. College principals, however, said they preferred the 100-mark exam.
The agitating students later agreed to one internal test covering only half the syllabus and a final examination on 75 per cent of the syllabus. The demand has not found favour with principals who, however, suggested that the first question in the question paper could be made compulsory, while examinees could choose five from the 11-question paper.
The option of attempting any five questions out of 10 was as good as having 50 per cent syllabus, they held.
