Students divided over election dates

The former points out that with the term of the old union expiring in September, the new union should take over. Those contesting this year point out that the current leaders want the elections to be postponed as they want to hold the reins for a longer time.

One of the students contesting for the post of the university general secretary, points out that if the elections are postponed, the union would not be able to complete its full term and next year would move court and obtain a stay order. Thus, the cycle would go on.

However, university General Secretary Prakash Verma, who supports the postponement, says Chirag Shah, who obtained a stay order from the court, was justified in approaching court. According to him, a month had already been lost in students8217; strike, which was followed by an agitation by teachers.

8220;The examination dates for the Faculty of Home Science have been declared and the vacation for the Polytechnic College will begin from December 24,8221; Verma said, adding amidst this schedule it would be difficult to conduct the elections as per the scheduled date.

When contacted, university Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane said he couldn8217;t take a decision as the court had declared a stay, but not many students were interested in elections. He, however, added that if stay was lifted and the students demanded an election, he would hold them.
