Blaming maoists for his posting in an extremist-infested area and citing stress in his job and family life, a Chhattisgarh Police constable killed a Naxalite in police custody on Tuesday night.

Constable Shyam Lal Chauhan posted at Ramgarh police post under Sonhat police station in Korea district was arrested after he killed Dhanraj, a Maoist. 8220;The incident took place at about midnight when Dhanraj was sleeping in the lock up. In a fit of rage, the constable shot him with his INSAS rifle,8221; said Inspector General Sarguja A N Upadhyay. Dhanraj received two bullet injuries which killed him on the spot. The constable was immediately overpowered and taken into custody and has been booked for murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

The IG said the murder was committed in a fit of anger. 8220;In preliminary questioning, the accused has accepted that he was fed up with the constant pressure faced in a Maoist-infested area,8221; the IG said

The IG said this was the first such case in the state where a uniformed personnel had killed a Naxalite in police custody. 8220;Police had taken Dhanraj to Ramgarh police post in connection with the recovery of weapons hidden by the extremists in the nearby jungles,8221; a source said.

Police sources said Dhanraj was a top Naxalite with a rank of area commander and carried a reward of Rs15,000 on his head. Suspected of being involved in several acts of violence in Naxal-infested districts of Korea, Balrampur, Surajpur, Sarguja and in neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, he had been arrested along with his wife from Baikunthpur area of Korea on Monday. His wife, Urmila, is still in police custody.
