CHANDIGARH, Aug 17: Direct elections will be held for the posts of office bearers of the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA).

Satya P. Gautam of the Department of Philosophy and Nirmal Singh of the Department of Physics are the two candidates for the post of president.

Veer Singh of the Department of Laws and Surinder Sekhon of the Department of Correspondence Studies will be contesting for the post of vice-president.

For the post of secretary, M. Shakeel Khan of Urdu and M. Rajivlochan are the two candidates. Ravi Mahajan of the Department of Correspondence Courses and Harjinder Singh of Chemistry are contesting for the post of joint secretary, while P. K. Mittal of Zoology and P. D. Sharma of Pharmacy are the candidates for the post of treasurer.

Meanwhile Shashi K. Sharma (Laws) and Dr S. K. Gupta (Evening Studies) today announced the withdrawal of their candidature in favour of Nirmal Singh. Dr. Naval Kishore (Geology) announced his withdrawal in favour of Veer Singh.

Prof Jai Prakash (Hindi) and Dr D. V. Rai (Biophysics) have supported M. Shakeel Khan, while D R Sharma (Sanskrit) has announced his support for P K Mittal.
