Since September 2002, the CID has been on the Navleen Kumar case 8212; the Nallasopara-based social activist had been brutally murdered in June 2002. Over the weekend, the CID finally got government approval for the custodial interrogation of main accused Manik Patil, who has been serving a life sentence in Pune8217;s Yerwada Jail, only to find him in a 8216;special room8217; of a Pune private clinic.
Investigating officers, on the condition of anonymity, say the Home Department8217;s go-ahead letter 8212; six months after the permission was sought 8212; was faxed to the CID8217;s Belapur office at 5.30 pm on Friday. The letter is valid for 8216;8216;15 days from the receival of this letter8217;8217;.
When they arrived at Yerwada Jail by noon the next day, the CID team was told that Patil was in a private nursing home in Guruwar Peth, 8216;8216;undergoing treatment for a heart condition8217;8217;. It was found that Patil had been admitted there since June 4.
8216;8216;Imagine our shock when we saw his wife Seema in the room with him,8217;8217; says a CID official, adding that the policemen guarding Patil were not around. But records at the Khadak Police Station specify that a sub-inspector, a head constable and two constables are manning Patil, he adds.
The Indian Express sent a team posing as lawyers to Pune. Here8217;s what the team found:
8226; Mira Nursing Home, on the first floor of Mansuram Naik Apartment, 733, Rashtra Bhushan Chowk, Guruwar Peth, is a 20-bed, flat-turned-nursing home with an operation theatre and delivery room.
8226; Nurses and Dr Kishore Chipole, the doctor treating Patil, say he8217;s suffering from hypertension, 8216;8216;a heart condition8217;8217; and diabetes.
While the hypertension is confirmed by authorities on condition of anonymity in Yerwada Jail, they add that Patil 8216;8216;complained of chest pain8217;8217; and 8216;8216;chose8217;8217; the clinic over the government-run Sasoon Hospital for tests and treatment. There8217;s no mention of diabetes.
8226; Back at the nursing home, an unarmed constable is on guard outside Patil8217;s 8216;special room8217;.
Top officials at the Inspectorate of Prisons insist Patil 8212; a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act offender and noted goon 8212; should be guarded by armed police no less than a sub-inspector, a head constable and two constables. Inspector V. Pawar of Khadak Police Station is out of town. No officer will comment.
8226; Dr Chipole says Seema Patil underwent 8216;8216;piles8217;8217; surgery and was 8216;8216;discharged on Sunday8217;8217;.
8226; In the two-bed 8216;special room8217;, a relaxed Manik Patil lies on a bed. There8217;s no sign of medication anywhere. No ventilator, no oxygen mask 8212; not even a diet chart.
Contacted hours later, Dr Chipole refused comment.
