Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini took late wickets Wednesday to leave the West Indies on 240-8 at the end of the first day of the second Test.
Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul shared a 106-run fourth wicket partnership as West Indies reached 183-3 before Samuels fell to Ntini for 51, caught behind by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.
Ntini struck again in his next over, getting the new batsman Dwayne Bravo to edge a catch to Jacques Kallis at second slip for a duck.
Denesh Ramdin joined Chanderpaul and held out with a 35-run partnership until Steyn struck with the new ball, trapping Ramdin leg before wicket for 21, and then clean bowling Rawl Lewis with his next delivery.
Steyn also got a ball to lift sharply on Jerome Taylor and took a simple return catch to dismiss him for eight. At the close Daren Powell had yet to score, and Chanderpaul was undefeated on 66 in another marathon innings—214 balls in almost six hours—after his 104 in the first Test.
Earlier, West Indies captain Chris Gayle won the toss at the Newlands Stadium and chose to bat.
South Africa’s pace bowlers took three wickets before lunch, with West Indies at 60-3. The tourists were in early trouble at 12-1 after Dale Steyn had opener Darren Ganga caught behind for three.
But Runako Morton joined Gayle in a partnership that scored 59 in 11 overs before Morton was out for 23, hitting the ball straight to Ntini in Kallis’ first over.
