
Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini took late wickets Wednesday to leave the West Indies on 240-8 at the end of the first day of the second Test.
Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul shared a 106-run fourth wicket partnership as West Indies reached 183-3 before Samuels fell to Ntini for 51, caught behind by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.
Ntini struck again in his next over, getting the new batsman Dwayne Bravo to edge a catch to Jacques Kallis at second slip for a duck.
Denesh Ramdin joined Chanderpaul and held out with a 35-run partnership until Steyn struck with the new ball, trapping Ramdin leg before wicket for 21, and then clean bowling Rawl Lewis with his next delivery.
Steyn also got a ball to lift sharply on Jerome Taylor and took a simple return catch to dismiss him for eight. At the close Daren Powell had yet to score, and Chanderpaul was undefeated on 66 in another marathon innings8212;214 balls in almost six hours8212;after his 104 in the first Test.
Earlier, West Indies captain Chris Gayle won the toss at the Newlands Stadium and chose to bat.
South Africa8217;s pace bowlers took three wickets before lunch, with West Indies at 60-3. The tourists were in early trouble at 12-1 after Dale Steyn had opener Darren Ganga caught behind for three.
But Runako Morton joined Gayle in a partnership that scored 59 in 11 overs before Morton was out for 23, hitting the ball straight to Ntini in Kallis8217; first over.
