Agitations

ITANAGAR: About 14000 teachers in Arunachal Pradesh will go on a two-day token strike from Wednesday in protest against non-implementation of the fifth pay commission recommendations, an Arunachal Teachers Association ATA press release said. The state government had promised to consider their demand several times but was unnecessarily delaying the implementation of the fifth pay commission. The striking teachers will take out peaceful processions in all district headquarters of the state and all schools will remain closed the next day.

IMPHAL: Seven activists of the National Students Union of India NSUI, who threatened self-immolation here on Monday, were arrested on Monday night. The students locked all rooms of the directorate of education schools, entered one room and threatened self-immolation unless their 19-point charter of demands was considered. Police broke open the door and arrested them. Meanwhile, Trabot Singh, Minister of Education Schools said the government lacked the funds to implement the demands.

Mishaps

KANPUR: Five persons were killed and 27 injured in a powerful blast in a pharmaceutical factory in Fazalganj here on Tuesday. Eighteen of the injured, including 11 women, who received 40 to 70 per cent burn injuries in the explosion, have been admitted to hospital.

SILIGURI: Traffic on the new Jalpaiguri-Malda broad gauge section in North Bengal was disrupted after a railway oil tanker caught fire early on Tuesday. The oil tanker caught fire between Eklakhi and Kumar Ganj and severely damaged Surdaha bridge, a link in the route. No casualties were reported. The situation was aggravated by the rail telecommunication link collapse after the incident.
