Water level in Mettur dam reaches half-way mark

CHENNAI: Water level in the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur reached the half way mark today when it touched about 60 feet, thanks to heavy inflows.

Sources said the water level had touched 59.77 feet at 8 am on Friday, with a storage of little over 24.51 tmc ft. The capacity of the reservoir was 93 tmc ft with a height of 120 feet. Today8217;s inflow into the dam was 21,819 cusecs. The outflow or the discharge from the dam was almost nil because of recent rains in the Cauvery delta area.

Girl killed by cousin in Bihar

JAMSHEDPUR: A nine-year-old girl was stoned to death allegedly by her cousin brother to pressurise her family to withdraw a case pending against him at Bialdih village in West Singhbhum district. According to a delayed report reaching here on Friday, Jiten Mahato along with three accomplices took his cousin sister, Sombrai, to a nearby jungle and killed her on Tuesday. Tikaram had earlier filed a case against Jiten alleging that the latter had raped his aunt, the victim8217;s mother, about two years ago. The case was sub-judice under Saraikela court. No arrests have been made so far.

Katchcha-banian gang members held

NEW DELHI: Delhi police has arrested six members of the notorious katchcha-banian gang which struck in the rural pockets of North-West Delhi last week looting cash and silver ornaments and injuring one. The accused, identified as Rampal 40, his son Anil 18, Yadh Ram 32, Prem Pal 28, Chitra 19 and Balbir 28, were nabbed yesterday from Siraspur area of North-West Delhi following a tip-off. Three country-made revolvers and 17 cartridges were recovered from them. 14 cases of dacoity and shootouts have been solved with their arrest.

Gold biscuits and coins seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Revenue intelligence officials have seized gold biscuits and coins worth Rs 18 lakh from a passenger who arrived here from Riyadh on Thursday. Revenue intelligence sources today said a total of 36 gold biscuits and 20 gold coins were seized from one Shahib, who arrived in Mumbai by an Air India flight and took a Jet Airways flight to Thiruvananthapuram. Sources said the contraband, which was concealed inside an emergency lamp and mixie, was seized on a tip-off.

Film festival in Capital

NEW DELHI: Festivals of seven films from Cyprus and 23 by the renowned German actor-filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder have commenced in the Capital to herald the onset of the cultural season that comes in the wake of cooler climes.

Ashok Sinha, Joint Secretary Films in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, inaugurated the patterns and facets of contemporary Cypriot cinema here earlier this week. Cypriot High Commissioner Rea Yiordamlis along with the directors of four of the films being exhibited was also present.
