One undertrial killed, 12 injured in Beur jail clash

PATNA: An undertrial was killed and twelve others injured when two rival groups of inmates clashed inside the Beur jail on the outskirts of the State capital here on Tuesday, the police said. The trouble started when a group of prisoners attacked an undertrial, Sanjay Gope, with sharp-edged weapons. Gope8217;s associates intervened to save him leading to the clash, the sources said. The police had to fire in the air and resort to lathi-charge to control the situation. Gope was later admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Other injured inmates were being treated inside the jail hospital.

Prisoner dies after consuming food

HYDERABAD: An accused in a murder case, hailing from Karnataka, who was lodged in the Anantapur sub-jail, died after taking meals on Tuesday, the police said here on Wednesday. V Ramakrishna fell ill after taking meals. He was shifted to government headquarters hospital at Anantapurwhere doctors declared him dead, the police informed. Ramakrishna was in the sub-jail since August, 1998.

Waiter shot at with air-gun

MADURAI: A waiter of a city restaurant sustained minor injuries when he was allegedly shot at by a customer with an air-gun. The customer who was short of Rs 88 asked the restaurant owner to send someone to collect the money to his house. The restaurant owner sent a waiter with the customer. The waiter was asked to wait outside the house while the customer went inside. He came out with his air gun and shot the waiter. A case had been registered against the customer who is absconding.
