MUMBAI, SEPT 28: Varun Charatkar ended St Paul8217;s Dadar 12-year drought with a goal that won them the under-12 Division II MSSA-Colgate Inter-school football title at the School Sports Centre, Azad Maidan today.

Charatkar pounced on a ball that made its way past a host of St Paul and St Xavier8217;s Fort A players and scored with five minutes on the clock. Malcolm Blakely took the corner kick, which resulted eventually in the goal, that gave him the satisfaction of playing a part in the end result after he almost wrote his name on the scorers8217; sheet.

Blakely made St Paul8217;s first threatening move, taking a shot from 20 yards which the otherwise inactive goalkeeper Vinesh Desai tipped over. Desai could puff his chest only for a brief while before Charatkar struck.

The 20-minute-a-half final had both teams struggling on an uneven ground, with either side able to find only two scoring opportunities each. St Xavier8217;s Jenis Khale made the only impact in the maiden half with a shot that gave the other goalkeeper Walter Richard a chance to draw gasps from the crowd. That move in the 19th minute was the only aberration for St Xavier who dominated the first half.

Azain Coutinho shot from point blank range in the dying minutes of the match which saw some frenetic action in the mid-field. But Richard scored over his counterpart with a reflex action that kept the ball out of the goalline.

St Xavier8217;s Dennis Liu did his bit to add glamour to the otherwise eventless tie with a few back volleys which were the highlight of the youngster8217;s competent defending.
