Born in Kolhapur, Shailaja Salokhe grew into India8217;s best table tennis player of her time, and had an intriguing rivalry with Indu Puri in the 70s. Shailaja won the national women8217;s title three times 8212; in 1974, 1976, and 1979, twice beating Puri in the finals. Making her debut at the Afro-Asian meet in China in 1971, the highlight of her international career was probably as a member of the Indian Railways team that won the World Railways Championship in Czechoslovakia in 1978. |
