WHAT8217;S going on? I am staring at one strand of my hair. It8217;s magnified 10 times and it looms at me from the TV monitor in the clinic. It8217;s just been yanked out by it8217;s bulbous root with the help of an epilator and now it is being analysed in an Australia-made Trichoanalyser machine. The charming lady conducting this test is one of 335 qualified trichologists in the world. Trichology, the science of hair and scalp, was developed in 1902 in England and is still in it8217;s infancy!

Interestingly, while examining my hair follicles and scalp, Sonal Shah can also determine the health of my body and mind. She can tell that I have stress in my life the secretion of hormones in my scalp tells her that and she can also tell that I don8217;t look after my hair like I should the thinning hair shafts tell her that. After taking a detailed history, she prescribes not just lifestyle and dietary changes but also supplements.

8216;8216;We have 100 per cent success in dealing with hair loss,8217;8217; she says happily. Most of us have, at some or the other, stared horrifiedly at falling clumps of hair. It might help to know that some sections of the hair are always in a falling phase and so some hair loss is normal. It8217;s called the Telogen phase. The growing phase is the Anagen and the resting phase is the Catagen one. And through her TV monitor and scalp testers, Dr Shah is able to analyse these phases.

A healthy ratio of growing and falling hair is 80:20; you need to take corrective steps if your ratio is otherwise. Of course, all of us do not have access to trichologists and so I have culled some useful guidelines8230;

8226; Eat the right food. Plenty of proteins and minerals, but in particular palak, paneer, milk, almonds and curd.

8226; Drink plenty of water8230; 12 to 14 glasses a day.

8226; You must use a good scalp nourisher regularly. Coconut and almond oil are good.

8226; The washing medium is very important. Shampoos should be chosen with care.

At the Rich Feel Trichology Centre in Mumbai, Dr Shah not only treats diffused hair loss, male and female pattern baldness, but also does non-surgical hair implant and integration, a special system with a derma front in which the person8217;s own hair is used to integrate with his natural hair. The surgical, single hair follicle grafting is also undertaken by Dr Jennifer Martinick, from Australia, who is associated with Dr Shah8217;s trichology clinic.
