SYDNEY, JANUARY 1: The Y2K bug, which in the end turned out to be the hoax of the millennium, ensured that the Indian cricket team did not get to spend New Year8217;s Eve together.
The team had planned joint celebrations at the Sydney Harbour, where the sky exploded to flashes of dazzling lights at the dot of midnight. The plan had to be given up as the hosts, where the team was to spend the evening, said they could not provide them security. The worry was that in case of the Y2K bug striking, plans could go awry and the Indian team left fending for themsleves. It was a risk which the team management was not willing to take. Not that the players did not celebrate, only they had to break into groups and be careful about the place they went to.
Waugh the skull-digger
SYDNEY: Steve Waugh8217;s Australians will wear a 1900-style skull cap to mark the first Test of the new millennium when they take the field against India tomorrow.
The hosts will put aside their traditional baggy caps and wearreplicas of the ones used by Australian players in the first Test of the 1900s against England.
8220;A couple of weeks ago I wondered what we could do to celebrate the first Test of the millennium,8221; Waugh said today.
8220;To wear the same cap was the first idea that that came into my head. It8217;s a skull cap and it8217;s a little bit different to the cap we wear now.
8220;It seems to give the players more character straightaway. You have got to know where you have come from, to know where you are going, I think that8217;s important in sport,8221; Waugh said.
