Son rise on track

The New Delhi Municipal Council may have rechristened Connaught Circus 8216;Indira Chowk8217; and Connaught Place 8216;Rajiv Chowk8217; in 1996, but for the Delhiite the area has always remained 8216;CP8217;, short for Connaught Place. Finally, that may be changing 8212; and only thanks to the Delhi Metro.

The civic agency had renamed the historical shopping district of Lutyens8217; Delhi, in an open and apparent attempt to please the ruling family of the Congress despite outrage from several quarters, including conservationists and opposition parties. But despite many ugly and unsightly hoardings and signboards proclaiming to the world that this was indeed Indira Chowk and Rajiv Chowk, Delhiites stubbornly continued to call it CP.

The politicians had almost given up the effort to immortalise the Nehru-Gandhi family in this manner when something happened: the Delhi Metro came along. Within a couple of years of its operations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been able to perform the task that the Capital8217;s politicians had failed to do for almost a decade.

And this was evident during my recent visit to the national capital. With the success of the mass rapid transit system8217;s Dwaka-Indraprashta line, which has the Rajiv Chowk station handling the largest number of commuters each day, the name 8216;Rajiv Chowk8217; is now on every lip. Commuters travelling on this very busy route can be constantly heard buying tokens for Rajiv Chowk station. The ghost of Lutyens may not be exactly pleased, but it does appear that 8216;CP8217; may finally pass into history. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been lauded for many firsts in our country. But this switchover in lingo must rank as its most unique achievement. It has been able to do what our sycophantic politicians could not.

The son has now made his mark. But since there is no station at Indira Chowk, the mother continues to remain unacknowledged by the lakhs who throng the Metro.
