THE arrest of Amarmani Tripathi on charges of murder, conspiracy, tampering and fabricating evidence has been well-timed with Mulayam Singh Yadav’s swearing-in as chief minister of Uttar Pardesh (‘Look who the CM defends’, IE, September 23).
With Tripathi joining the Samajwadi Party, the chief minister has assured ‘‘no action’’ against him. Will this pledge by Mulayam Singh over-rule all norms of conduct and civil behaviour? Politicians have dual personalities — one when in power; and another when powerless.
Such somersaults are expected from an old wrestler like Mulayam Singh. The only difference is that first it was a physical somersault, now it is a mental somersault.

Fueling change
THIS refers to the news story ‘Where you live will decide your fuel price’ (IE, September 23). This concept is nothing new. Price at any location used to be the main terminal (at the nearest port) price plus freight, as per the Damle commission report during Morarji Desai’s finance ministership. This was amended to include refinery as the starting point.
What we need is not these cosmetic changes in pricing but a study in order to come up with a realistic method of pricing to ensure fairness.

On a pair
SANDEEP DWIVEDI suggests that the current opening pair is okay for Tests and there is no need for new faces (‘Current pair should close the opening
debate’, IE, September 23). This would amount to doing great injustice to a cricketer like S. Ramesh. He has a better average in Tests than Virender Sehwag.
Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar have not proved their Test credentials as yet. As Wright and Borde say, S.S. Das is the only long-term prospect. It is okay to take chances on placid pitches but not in Australia or New Zealand.
So let the selectors look at the statistics before deciding.

Domestic challenge
THE best feature of the Irani Trophy match between Mumbai and Rest of India was the sincere and disciplined approach of the players. While the juniors put up an impressive show to prove their mettle to the selectors, the seniors led by example and struck form just before the coming series against New Zealand.
The spirited performance of the juniors shows that there is lots of promising talent in Indian cricket and it is only that they should be given more opportunities and groomed properly.
The selectors, in fact, are going to have a hard time in deciding as to which among them should be chosen to represent the country at the national level!
If our boys continue to perform with the same grit and determination they
displayed in the Irani Trophy tie, there is no reason why they cannot take sweet revenge for the humiliation they suffered at the hands of the Kiwis last winter.

Any which way
KULDIP NAYAR wants to be king (‘Warning from Rae Bareli’, IE, September 23). If the judge didn’t find enough evidence, then the judge is not up to the mark. If the CBI didn’t find the proof, then the CBI is not up to the mark.
It’s like, if you deliver what I want then you are good, otherwise you are corrupt and worthless.
