On December 3 the Inner Wheel of Pune Central observed World Disabled Day for the deaf and mute at the Bal Kalyan Sanstha on Ganeshkhind road. The club donated 20 hearing aids to the children of the C.R. Ranganathan school. On December 27, seven hearing aids will be given to the children of Sanvad School, Lonavala. Earlier the club had organised a free check up camps for 128 children at the Inlaks Budharani hospital for 123 children coming from various schools like C.R. Ranganathan , S.V. Joshi school, Ambegaon, and Chaitanya Muk Budhir Vidyalaya. The function was organised by club president Anjali Rawat.
In search of self
Vrajabasi Das, a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness ISKCON spoke on 8220;Who are we? What is the goal of our life?8221; at Sadhu Vaswani hall on December 3. The programme was well attended by people from Salisbury Park as Das elaborated on the relevance of the Bhagwad Gita and its importance in today8217;s world and the search for one8217;s identity.
Blood donation drive
The Rotary and Inner Wheel club of Poona Riverside organised a blood donation drive at the Anna Saheb Magar College, Hadapsar. Around 125 bottles were collected during the drive by the National Service Scheme NSS wing of the college. The drive was inaugurated by chief guest Balasaheb Shivarkar and club president Rohit Jerajani proposed the vote of thanks. Each student was presented with a memento in appreciation of their noble gesture.
Kartikai festival
The Kartikai Deepam festival was celebrated at the Untade Maruti Mandir, located near the KEM hospital, Rasta Peth, from December 1 to 3. Traditional 1Abhishekam, alankaram and maha aarti was performed with the entire temple being lit up with diyas. This festival is celebrated with great fervour throughout Tamil Nadu and is greeted with great enthusiasm by the Tamil population in Pune.
Computer training started
The Rotary Club of Poona Airport has started two computer classes at St. Andrews High School for Girls and Lady Hawabai Girls school. Two computers were given to the school. Free training will be provided to the students except for nominal costs towards the consumables.
Prelude to Ramzaan
The Shab-E-Baraat was celebrated on December 4 throughout the city with great fervour. People offered namaaz throughout the night and visited various cemeteries to offer their obeisance to their forefathers. This event takes place just before the Ramzaan month starts off on December 20. Adults as well as kids got together at night in the various parts of the city to celebrate the day, which they believe, is a day when their future for the coming year is written down.
New governing body
Elections for the governing body of the Shree Shanmukhanand Sabha were held recently. This body will be in office for the next three years. P.N.V Krishnan was elected the president, K.N. Venkatarama and V. Srinivasan as vice presidents and S. Bhageerathan and P.S Swaminathan as secretary and joint secretary respectively. The Sabha will be celebrating its golden jubilee in 1999.
Demo on backache
The Senior Citizens Welfare association of Mira Society were given instruction on how to get rid of backaches by noted expert, S.M. Acharya, on December 2. Providing a demonstration of his Acharya Backache Technique which provides relief in three minutes. He also spoke at length on the Save India Organisation that he has founded.
Sports for the disabled
The Lions Club of Poona Erandvana and the Bal Kalyan Sanstha jointly organised the World Disabled Day on December 3 at the Police grounds, Shivajinagar. Well known swimming champion, Taranath Shenoy was the chief guest at the function. More than 2000 students from 40 handicapped schools participated in the celebrations that included a march past, a malakhamb and Pyramids. The prizes to the winners were given away at the hands of the chief guest Shenoy and asst. commissioner of police Prakash Ashterkar.
