PUNE, Jan 3: Last years runners-up Simarjeet Singh of Oil India Limited `A’ carded a one-under 70 to take sole leadership in the XIXth Petroleum Sports Control Board (PSCB) golf tournament at the Poona Club golf course today.

Three strokes adrift was teammate and defending champion Harmeet Singh Kahlon who shared second spot with Amit Dubey of ONGC `A’.

For Simarjeet the going was not smooth as the final day’s score seems to indicate as he opened his quest with a bogey on the par-4 1st when he missed a simple two-foot putt which rounded the cup and cost a stroke.

With birdies on the 11th, 13th and 16th Simarjeet looked all set for a happy ending on his way in. However his good work was undone when he bogied the subsequent holes that followed. “A bad second shot on the 17th and an equally not-to-good third on the 18th blew my chances,” he explained.

“The pin positions today were tournament type and with quick greens, the overall game was interesting,” informed the 23-year-old Officer Special Duty (OSD) who is playing his second petroleum meet.

Visibly thrilled by his performance, Simarjeet attributed good putting as the key to today’s success.

Harmeet, India No. 1 in the amateur section, too had a bad 9th in his run today where he misjudged his putt to go two-over. But with birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th he neutralised the deficit, and later agreed to Simarjeet on the quickness of the greens.

Joining Harmeet, who is the defending champion, in joint second spot was Amit Dubey who also did duty at the Bankok Asiad. The high point of his card was an eagle on the par-5 12th.

Among the ladies who excelled were Urvashi Sethi of BPCL `A’ who carded 75 today while next best was Parnita Grewal with 78 — both incidentally were part of the fourth placed Indian squad at Bangkok.
