PUNE, Feb 4: A large collection of silver ornaments, estimated at over Rs 5.67 lakh, was stolen from Nigdi-based Daulat Jewellers in a burglary on Thursday morning.

Operating in a daring manner, the unidentified thieves removed the asbestos sheet forming the roof of the shop located on the Mumbai-Pune highway and forced entry into a room where the jewellery is manufactured.

They broke open an iron door of the staircase in the two-storied building housing the shop and entered the main compartment. They stole several anklets, rings, silver toys and utensils after breaking open the showcases.

A sizable collection of the jewellery was saved as the burglars failed to break open the iron safe.

The burglars, forced entry around 9.45 p.m. on Wednesday. They are suspected to have spent at least a couple of hours in the shop.

The police suspect the involvement of five to six persons. Three persons may have entered the shop while the others stood outside on watch. The incident came to light when the shop owner, Siddhanath Yashvant Metkari of Laxmi Nagar in Nigdi, returned to open the shop around 9 a.m. on Thursday. Metkari found the shop ransacked and immediately lodged a first information report at Nigdi-Pradhikaran police chowki.

Metkari had set up the shop six months ago. At least 10 other jewellery shops are in the neighbourhood. Metkari has employed a watchman to guard the shop. However, the watchman was absent on duty last night.
