MUMBAI, JAN 8: A three-day exhibition on housing, housing finance and banking, organised by the South Indian Education Society SIES, was inaugurated today at the SIES High School premises, Matunga.

The exhibition, organised as part of the decannary celebrations of the SIES College of Commerce and Economics, was inaugurated by Satish Mehta, general manager, Housing Development Finance Corporation HDFC. Leading financial institutions like RBI, SBI, GIC Housing, LIC Housing, NABARD and MTNL are participating in the exhibition.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Mehta said the proposed repeal of the Urban Land Ceiling Act and the Rent Control Act would increase the availability of urban land. This, in turn, would give a boost to construction activity, he added.

Besides, Foreign Direct Investment in the housing sector would increase the cash flow in the sector, leading to increased construction activity, Mehta noted. At the exhibition, other than banking stalls, there are entertainment stalls as well, such asones on computer games, general knowledge quizzes, horoscope reading and palmistry. An inter-collegiate elocution contest and essay competitions were also organised, wherein nearly 25 city colleges took part.

K Kannan, chairperson and managing director, Bank of Baroda, will deliver the valedictory address on Banking in the New Millennium8217; and R Pai, honorary secretary of All India Banks Depositors Association, will speak on Consumer 8211; How to Handle Your Money and Bank8217; on January 10. The films section of the exhibition will feature short films from the Loss Prevention Society and NABARD.
