SHRIEKING ON PHREAKING

If you think hackers were the only people who started out with invading privacy in the digital world, then you8217;re way wrong. Imagine the damage done by the 21 year old Philipino with his love bug virus increased 10 fold. Hackers aren8217;t the only ones who could do large scale damage. In fact even before hackers came into existence, another rebel community prowled in the digital world. They were called Phreakers8217;.

Just as the convergence of voice and data along with that of PC8217;s and phones is inevitable, so is the convergence of hackers and Phreakers. This will raise a serious new threat to security as hacking possibilities will become endless as Phreakers will be using the Internet to penetrate the phone systems.

It would even make it possible to plant a virus into a phone system, which would send messages to everyone on the speed-dial-list or to everyone in the office.

Actually Phreaking can also create avenues for pranks which could bug the living daylights out of people. It might be possible to put someone8217;s voicemail into a never-ending recursive loop, sending voicemail to itself, leaving a message, then sending that voicemail to itself, leaving a message, then sending that voicemail to itself again, and on and on. All it would take is a macro virus and the press of one button by the victim. People who don8217;t bother to change their default passwords for their voicemail boxes in mobile phones could be harassed by Phreakers who could simply change their voicemail greeting message by logging in with the Administrator Pin/Number of the phone company. Somebody needs to figure out how to firewall those phones.

So does this phreak you out? We hope it8217;s opened your eyes and makes you think twice about embracing technology blindly in the future.
