Depleted Rovers

This year’s Rovers Cup football Tournament, scheduled to be held at the Cooperage ground from November 1-15, will be a scaled down affair due to the financial crunch faced by its organisers.

“Due to financial constraints the newly-elected committee members of the Western India Football Association (Wifa) have decided to hold the event as an eight-team affair instead of the usual 16 to cut down on expenses,” Wifa spokesman Pervez Ziauddin said.

“As of now only four outstation teams and Mohammedan Sporting of Dhaka are in the fray along with three local Super League outfits though we had sent invitations to some other teams from outside Maharashtra,” Ziauddin said.

JCT (Phagwara), FC Kochin (Kerala), Salgaocar, Churchill Brothers (both Goa) are the Indian from outside the State and the three local teams which are in the eight-team draw are Mahindra and Mahindra, Air-India and Bengal Mumbai Football Club, according to the Wifa Vice-President.
