Irani, Anagha to lead

Neville Irani and Anagha Bhave, both of R A Podar, will lead Mumbai University in the men’s and women’s sections, respectively, in the Inter-University (West Zone) table tennis tournament at Raigad District from November 4 to 7.

Men’s: Neville Irani (Podar) captain, Kedar Kasbekar (Hinduja), Mushir Ulde (Jai Hind), Jigar Rambhia (Mithibai) and Trilok Prabhune (Sydenham).

Women’s: Anagha Bhave (Podar) captain, Pradnya Sawant (Vaze), Devika Thatte (Chandibai) and Kalyani Gadre (BPCA).

Live cricket scores

The United Breweries website, kingfisherworld.com, has made arrangements to relay live on the Net, cricket scores of the ongoing Wills Mini World Cup matches being played at Dhaka.

The website also has plans to relay ball-by-ball scores of major tournaments which are to be held during the forthcominng cricket season.

Theannual Business India cricket tournament will be held from November 3 to 14. The tournament is open to 16 teams and restricted to 20 overs only. For urther information conntact Harish Suvarna on 288 3942/43/44.

Celebrity golf clinic

Royal Palms is organising a celebrity golf clinic on November 1 from 3.30 p.m. onwards. Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones and India’s former Test player Roger Binny, both keen golfers, will head the camp as coaches and impart skills that give an edge in golf.

The clinic will be preceded by a head-to-head, a one-on-one encounter between Jones and Binny.

Gold for Indian powerlifter

Lokesh Mendon, the 12-times National powerlifting champion, bagged the gold medal in the shot put event of the 10th Asian Veteran Athletic Meet at Okinawa, Japan recently.

Mendon, sponsored by Standard Industries Ltd and Mogaveera Cooperative Bank, threw the shot to a distance of 13.35 metres. The silver and bronze went to two Japanese, Koji Miyagami (12.80) andNorimara Funasiki (11.95).

Western India Squash from Nov 7

THE 55th Credit Agricole Indo-Suez CCI Western India Open squash tournament will be held at the CCI courts from November 7 to 14. Substantial increase in prize-money will be offered for this championship.

Entries close on Saturday, October 31 at 5 p.m.

Bombay District Cycle races

The Bombay District Cycling Association will be conducting a 30km Open race for men, 12km for Roadstar cycles and a 12km race for boys under-18 on Sunday, November 1 at the Bandra Kurla Complex at 7 a.m.

JS Pereira Tennis

The JS Pereira Tennis tournament, which is considered one of the oldest tennis tournaments of the city, will be an All India Tennis Association event for the first time. Precious AITA points — 15 for the winner and 12 for the runners-up — is up for grabs besides the prize money fund of Rs81,000.

The tournament will be held in the Bandra Gymkhana courts, St. Andrew’s Road, from November 2 to 8. The events are the under-16 and under-14 boys and girls. The sign-in is on October 30 and the qualifying rounds will be held on October 31 and November 1.

Otters to field two teams

Otters Club are fielding most of the top players in Maharashtra for the Rs 62,500 Royal Palms Golf and Country Club’s Open handicap team squash tournament to be held at the club’s courts in Goregaon from October 31 to November 1.

Such is the wealth of talent in their midst that Otters club have, in a tactical move, distributed their forces and are fielding two teams of almost equal strenghth.

Thus, Otters A consists of Manish Choitrani, who won the recent Dewan Housing event, Santosh More, the number one among professionals, Junaid Nathani, the National under-16 champion, Karanpal Sethi, a talented under-14, Cyrus Poncha, well-known coach Carl Bokdawala.

Otters B comprises Niraj Shirgaokar who ledMaharashtra to victory at the National Inter-State championship, Abhijit Kukreja, an under-19 semi-finalist at the Little Masters, Arif Patel, Avinash Bavnani, Vijay Sonawane and Vinjay Bajaj.
