Uzma Khan seeded No 1

  • UZMA Khan of Andhra Pradesh has been given pride of place in the Rs 1 lakh prize money All-India Ranking women8217;s tennis tournament to be held at Shivaji Park Gymkhana from May 11 to 16.
  • Maharashtra8217;s Jahnavi Parekh has been seeded second behind Uzma, a release said here today.

    Following is the seeding: 1 Uzma Khan AP, 2 Jahnavi Parekh Mah, 3 J Sai Jayalakshmy TN, 4 Janaki Krishnamurthy Kar, 5 Aparna Srinivasan Mah, 6 Reetu Sethi Mah, 7 Juthika Choksi Mah, 8 Nehal Chopra Del.

    Tendulkar eligible for award

  • Sachin Tendulkar is only eight points away from leader Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka in the latest Ceat International Cricketer-of-the-year Rating list. Tendulkar is now on 114 points as against fiery opener Jaysuriya8217;s 122 and stands an excellent chance of wining the coveted prize of Rs 5 lakh.
  • The season has now closed and the three adjudicators Sunil Gavaskar, Ian Chappell and Clive Lloyd will give the final verdict. As perthe conditions of the rating, if the difference between the leader and the second man is less than 10 points, then the adjudicators will take into account the detailed performances, particularly the strength of opposition and the venues. Jayasuriya scored 1,083 runs in 19 Test innings and 1,336 runs in 29 One-day knocks whereas Tendulkar has scored 935 runs off 12 Tests innings and 1,457 runs in 38 One-day innings.

    The third man on the list, Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, with 107 points, is out of reckoning.

    BCCI gesture towards Desai8217;s family

  • The national selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI, in a magnanimous gesture, announced a donation of Rs 50,000 to the bereaved family of late Test cricketer and chairman Ramakant Desai who died a few days ago here.
  • BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele said the money was pooled in by all five selectors 8212; Kishen Rungta, Ajit Wadekar, Shivlal Yadav, Sambaran Bannerjee and M P PandoveBefore that, a unanimous resolution waspassed putting Desai8217;s service on the record. Chairman Rungta said it was pleasure working with him and to be honest, he was the only selector who never lost his cool and his suggestions were like requests despite having powers as the chairman. 8220;He showed the way how to humbly serve and we shall try to continue that way,8221; he added.

    Six umpires to debut in Triangular

  • Six umpires will make their international debut during the Triangular One-day contest between India, Bangladesh and Kenya starting from May 14.
  • They are Rajan Seth Delhi, Dr B K Sadashiv Kar, C R Mohite Baroda, K N Raghvan Kochi, A Bhattacharjee Calcutta and Sudhir Asnani Indore.

    Second Police Cup hockey tourney

  • The Bombay Hockey Association will conduct the Second Police Cup hockey tournament for all the affiliated units of BHA to be played at Naigaum Police Head Quarters Ground from May 18.
  • The entry fee has been fixed at Rs 250 for Super and Senior Divisions and Rs 150 for private clubs.First, second, third and fourth division teams will have to pay Rs 100 as entry fee. The last date for entries is May 13, 6 p.m.

    Two-day rally to be flagged off today

  • Maharashtra health minister Dr D S Ahir and Nashik guardian minister Babanrao Gholap will flag off a two-day motorcycle and car rally starting tomorrow from hotel Taj Residence in Nasik. Organised jointly by Nashik.
  • Automotive Sports Association and Hotel Taj Residence, the total prize money includes Rs 2.5 lakh to be divided between winners of the motorcycle and car rally.
