Shifting the Commonwealth Games village from its present location at this juncture could 8220;seriously jeopardise8221; Delhi8217;s chances of hosting the mega event in 2010, Commonwealth Games Federation CGF Coordination Commission chairman Austin Sealy said on Tuesday.
Sealy was reacting to the setting up of a four-member committee by Delhi High Court to study the ecological harm the Games village, which is being constructed on the Yamuna river-bed, could possibly have.
8220;The federation is aware that an issue affecting the village is presently before the courts in India and therefore considers it inappropriate to comment on the matter other than to note that any change, at this late stage, to the Games village arrangements would seriously jeopardise India8217;s hosting of the Games,8221; said Sealy at the end of two-day meeting of the commission.
The Games village, however, was not the only issue Sealy touched upon; he was also surprised to find that the work for the cycling velodrome had not started yet. 8220;That is a real concern. If the work is not started immediately, it will be difficult to complete things before the Games,8221; he cautioned.
He suggested that a temporary velodrome could be a solution, but added that arrangements like changing rooms, press centre and certain other features needed to be permanent. Sealy then sought and assurance from organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi on the issue who, in turn, said things would be taken care of. 8220;I have been told that tenders have already been floated and things will start moving by December 2008,8221; Kalmadi said.
That apart, the Coordination Commission chairman felt things were 8220;moving in the right direction8221; and they were 8220;happy with the progress so far8221;. Sealy also said his colleagues had visited the Games village and were impressed. 8220;I will make a visit tomorrow to see if I can endorse their views,8221; he added.
