
Seven activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India SIMI have been arrested on charges of providing assistance to their former chief Safdar Nagori and 12 other top leaders nabbed last week in a major crackdown against the outfit.
Five activisits were apprehended early this morning from Unhel town near Ujjain, which, police said, was a major centre for SIMI activists to carryout their anti-national plans.
The arrested are Jabil Parvez 8211; brother of Aamil Parvez who was held last week 8211; Aiyaz, Akbar, Irshad and Mehruddin, Sub Divisional Police Officer SDOP Sanjeev Singh said.
Two SIMI activists were arrested last night from Indore, Madhya Pradesh8217;s commerical capital, Suprintendent of Police, Anshuman Singh Yadav said.
They have been identified as Abdul Razzak and Rais Ahmed Khan. Both are criminals with past records and hail from Indore, police said.
They were being questioned with regard to their involvement in illegal activities and helping anti-national elements, they said.
On March 27, police had arrested 13 top SIMI activists, including Nagori, who was also the outfit8217;s Madhya Pradesh chief, from the city8217;s Shyam Nagar area. Intelligence agencies are questioning all of them at Armed Police Training College, Indore.
Nagori and the 12 top SIMI leaders have been charged with collecting arms with intention of waging a war against the Indian Government and promoting enmity between classes and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. They are currently in police custody till April 11.
The radical outfit was proscribed in 2001 and Nagori had been missing since then. It is often accused of links with terror outfits and involvement in anti-national activities, charges denied by the organisation set up in 1977.
