VADODARA, May 7: Members of the Gujarat Senior Citizens Federation here have written to the Union Finance Minister to consider some reliefs for elderly citizens in his maiden budget.
Federation executive secretary Desai said in the letter that besides defining senior citizen as one who has not gainfully employed and has completed 58 years of service, some reliefs in Income-Tax be given to senior citizens.
Asking the minister to entitle senior citizens 8211; like NRIs 8211; to higher differential bank interest, Desai said that the former should also be given exemption from Income-Tax payment on medical expenses. He also asked for exemption up to certain amount incurred as fares.
The Federation office-bearers held that such reliefs were sought by senior citizens as most of them 8212; having to live away from their earning sons or daughters 8212; have to maintain themselves either on pension or earnings they derive from their savings which was peanuts in today8217;s times. Moreover, with old age the medical expenses also increased thus burdening them further, they added.
