8226; This refers to your editorial, 8216;The CD affair8217;. Apparently, our MPs feel concerned at the erosion of our parliament8217;s dignity and authority. I wish to ask them whether their conduct on the floor of the House has been appreciable in upholding the parliament8217;s privilege and credibility, particularly when they throw pieces of furniture at their opponents, or tear official documents. Such instances have been many when the nation felt ashamed of their conduct. Is this one of the many attempts to divert national attention from the pressing problems facing the country?

Keep House out

8226; Apropos of your editorial, 8216;The CD affair8217;, the LS committee formed by the Speaker cannot dig out the truth, as they are more interested in protecting their parties than meting out justice. I would suggest that the case be investigated by an independent agency, which should be given full freedom to question any person and view all CDs. Although it is the parliament8217;s right to decide on issues involving MPs, the rule needs to be relaxed in exceptional cases such as this.

Big Two as one

8226; The editorial, 8216;Big Two talking8217; makes a sagacious appeal to the Congress and the BJP to work together on economic matters. However, the immediacy of elections will promote competitive rather than collaborative behaviour. There is little scope for cooperation, but the parties could surely come together to fight terrorism. A danger to national security and a move to increase their pay are the only two occasions when our representatives show exemplary cohesion.

Mother8217;s plight

8226; Your front page report, 8216;Court underlines the law to deny a mother her plea to abort8217;, made for sad reading. My heart goes out to the Mehtas who were denied permission by the Bombay High Court to abort an abnormal pregnancy. I think such matters need a humanitarian reasoning and cannot be judged by current laws. I strongly feel that the verdict would have been different if a women bench had heard the case. Who would be responsible if something happens to Niketa during her abnormal pregnancy or to her child thereafter?

Stampede sop

8226; While we mourn the Naina Devi tragedy, one fails to understand the logic behind the monetary compensation given to victims of the stampede. They set up for the temple of their own accord and were killed or injured in a melee for which they also may be partly to blame and not in a natural calamity. Clearly, the government is giving money to victims in order to divert the public attention from its failure to regulate traffic to such places.
