Gurpreet Singh was wandering on the streets of Nawanshahr after doing his Plus Two, when his friend, Jatinder Singh, who works for a security agency, told him about the training being offered at Punjab Police Security Training Institute PPSTI at Jahan Khelan in Hoshiarpur, and asked him to meet the official concerned.
Today, he is training at PPSTI and is happy that his life has got a direction. 8220;This course will not only make me physically fit, but also improve my mannerism, as I come from a rural background,8221; says Gurpreet.
While the recession has put a freeze on recruitments elsewhere in the world, unemployed youths in Punjab have a reason to smile. The state police and the government are providing free of cost training to help them secure jobs in security agencies, some of which include Group Four Security, Check Mate Security and Terra Force.
In the last 11 months the course started on January 21 last about 750 youths from Punjab have been placed in security agencies after two-month training. Recently, about 2,000 boys from various districts, including 270 from Jalandhar range, were selected for the course.
Sub-Inspector Kulbir Singh, who is in charge of Indoor Faculty, PPSTI, says the boys were selected as per the Punjab Police Security Rules, 2007. Besides a strict physical fitness regimen, the youths would also be trained in good manners, English speaking and computers.
Kulbir says, 8220;There are 3,300 security agencies in India and our boys are always in demand because of the professional training. The top-most agencies of the country have been in touch with us for recruitment. All the three previous batches, in which about 750 boys were trained, saw 100 per cent placement. Their starting pay is between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000.8221;
Surinder Singh, a trainee, says the course is of great help in bringing drug addicts back into the mainstream. 8220;Even those with a graduation degree are taking up this training, as some of the pass-outs have been able to secure jobs in Dubai and other Middle-Eastern countries,8221; chips in Kulbir.
